50MW BESS Project - Burwell, UK
The smart energy services provider engaged Trina Storage for the supply of
an integrated 50MW grid-scale energy storage system.
Challenges
Beyond compliance with UK Health & Safety regulations, the
COVID-19 pandemic introduced further challenges surrounding testing, vaccinations,
and site management. Furthermore, the small site footprint limited the space
for storage and deliveries. And finally, challenges associated with the Brexit
lead to a shortage in shipping capacity, demanding careful supply chain management to source the required
components.
The Solution
After providing a comprehensive technical pre-sales consultancy, Trina Storage supported planning
requirements. The company designed and supplied the full BESS (Battery Energy Storage Solution) according to
the highest standards, with factory acceptance tests, commissioning, and site acceptance tests.
The system can achieve a ramp rate of 100 MW/sec or higher, meeting the requirements of the
Dynamic Containment Service in case of large generation or consumption drop-outs. Operational by the end of Q1
2022, the storage system is primarily deployed to provide balancing services to the UK’s national grid.
Benefits
Trina Storage aims to set the standards in bankability, cost-effectiveness, reliability, safety, service,
and sustainability. The sustainable storage solution will improve the UK grid’s resiliency, helping integrate
intermittent renewable generation. By increasing the renewable energy share in the UK, the project contributes
to the net zero target by 2050.
By forging an end-to-end partnership with SMS plc and third parties, Trina Storage can reduce
complexity and project delivery times. Its dedicated supply chain and procurement teams enable SMS plc to
achieve cost optimization on system level and reduce supply risks, leveraging Trina Storage’s group buying
power. Trina Storage only uses tier-one components for highest quality, performance, and safety.
