In the Port of Antwerp, the waterfront warehouse of MSC MedRepair has emerged as a beacon of sustainability and a model for smart energy solutions that benefit businesses, investors, building owners and the community.

Commercial and industrial rooftops present a significant opportunity for businesses to generate sustainable electric power at scale, reducing energy costs and carbon emissions while enhancing onsite energy autonomy. In the Port of Antwerp, the site owner partnered with investor firm Engie and the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company Eoluz to realise a vision of sustainable energy for the MSC MedRepair warehouse. It’s a collaboration that not only promotes sustainability but also makes strong business sense.

Engie financed the construction of the solar plant, minimising upfront costs and risks for the site owner. The energy generation from the rooftop has been made available to MSC MedRepair at a favourable tariff, providing them cost savings and sustainability benefits while allowing them to focus on their core operations. Eoluz managed the installation of the rooftop array, which ensured minimal disruption to the daily activities of MSC MedRepair.

It’s a winning combination: The building owner benefits from utilising formerly empty rooftop space for power generation, the investor expands their green energy portfolio, the EPC company builds opportunities for future solar projects and the local community benefits from enhanced grid stability and reduced environmental impact.

This smart and sustainable energy initiative is powered by 2,736 advanced Vertex S modules from Trinasolar, comprising a robust 1,080 kW rooftop solar PV system. It is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 223 tonnes and to generate about 1,041 MWh of clean electricity in its place every year. Seventy percent of the plant’s output powers MSC MedRepair's facility, while the remaining energy is fed back into the local grid, benefiting the surrounding community.
